Sporting clubs across Townsville, Mackay, the Whitsundays and surrounding North Queensland regions will soon be able to access funding for energy upgrades including solar panels, battery storage, lighting upgrades, HVAC, energy audits and disaster-ready infrastructure.
The Australian Government’s Game On: Teaming Up for Climate Action program is now expected to open for Round 1 applications on 1st July 2026 and close on 28th July 2026.
Eligible community sporting clubs may be able to apply for grants from $25,000 up to $100,000 to help reduce energy costs, improve facilities and become more energy resilient.
At Green Energy Technologies, we’re passionate about helping local clubs reduce power bills and keep more money in the club.
We’ve already helped North Queensland Cowboys House save approximately $6,000–$7,000 per month with solar and battery… and in the words of Fiona Pelling, CEO of NRL Cowboys House, “That’s a LOT of fundraising!”
And now, we want to help more local sporting clubs across Townsville, Mackay and the Whitsundays explore what may be possible through this new sports club energy grant.

Why Solar and Battery Storage Matter for Sporting Clubs
For many community sporting clubs, power bills are one of the biggest ongoing expenses.
Every dollar spent on electricity is money that could otherwise go towards:
- Junior sport programs
- Equipment
- Facility upgrades
- Coaching and development
- Travel and competition costs
- Keeping membership fees affordable
- Supporting volunteers and local families
If your club has a clubhouse, canteen, cold rooms, sheds, change rooms, field lighting or high evening energy use, solar and battery storage may help reduce ongoing electricity costs and improve energy resilience.
Solar can help your club generate power during the day, while battery storage can help make better use of that solar energy and provide additional support during outages, storms or peak usage periods.
Cowboys House Success Story: Solar + Battery Savings in North Queensland
GET has already seen the impact solar and battery can have for a major North Queensland community organisation.
We installed a solar and battery system for North Queensland Cowboys House, helping them reduce their ongoing power costs and improve energy security.
Cowboys House is now saving approximately $6,000–$7,000 per month with solar and battery.
That’s a huge result. Watch below to hear what Fiona Pelling, CEO of NRL Cowboys House had to say:
And for our local sporting clubs, those kind of savings can make a real difference.
It can mean less fundraising pressure, more money staying in the club, and more resources available for players, volunteers, families and the wider community.
This is exactly why we’re excited about the new sports club energy grant.
We’ve helped Cowboys House achieve a strong result, and now we’d love to help more sporting clubs across Townsville, Mackay and the Whitsundays regions explore how solar and battery storage could support their club’s future.
Could Your Sporting Club Benefit?
This grant opportunity may be worth exploring if your club is located in Townsville, Mackay, the Whitsundays or surrounding North Queensland communities and has:
- High power bills
- A clubhouse, canteen, shed or cold room
- Field, court or facility lighting
- Interest in solar panels or battery storage
- Concerns about blackouts, storms or energy reliability
- A facility that needs energy efficiency upgrades
- A committee looking for funding opportunities
For North Queensland clubs, this isn’t just about saving money.
It’s about safer training during short winter days, fewer disruptions during wet season, better protection through storm and cyclone season, and keeping more money in the club instead of spending it on power bills.
From teams training or packing up gear in the dark, to facilities impacted by storms, blackouts or wet season interruptions, solar, battery storage and energy upgrades can help clubs become more resilient all year round.
Even if your club is not sure whether it qualifies, it’s worth starting the conversation early.
The grant application window is short, so clubs need to move quickly to gather information, assess energy needs and organise quotes and supporting documents.
