Who They Are

Protecting The Whitsundays Since 2009

Eco Barge Clean Seas Inc is a not-for-profit environmental organisation dedicated to preserving and protecting the marine environment and wildlife of the Whitsundays and Great Barrier Reef. Since its inception in 2009, the organisation has worked tirelessly to combat marine debris, protect marine life, and raise awareness about the importance of environmental stewardship in North Queensland’s iconic waters.

Operating out of their headquarters in the Whitsundays, Eco Barge runs a busy operation. The team organises barge trips to remove marine debris from local islands, operates a rescue and rehabilitation centre for sick and injured marine turtles, and processes the debris collected from waterways. Back in 2013, Green Energy Technologies partnered with Eco Barge to provide a 5kW solar system for their headquarters.

The Problem

Growing Impact, Growing Energy Bills

Over the years, Eco Barge’s impact has been extraordinary: over 263,221 kilograms of marine debris collected, more than 550 barge clean-up trips completed, and over 272 injured turtles cared for in their dedicated rescue centre. As Eco Barge’s reach and impact have expanded, so too have their operational demands, running a facility that processes large amounts of marine debris and houses multiple quarantine tanks for turtles requires significant energy.

For any not-for-profit organisation, keeping operational costs down is critical. Funds saved on running expenses can be redirected toward conservation activities, rescue operations, and community outreach. However, with growing energy needs, Eco Barge found that electricity bills were quickly becoming one of their highest recurring costs.

The Solution

A 13kW Upgrade, Installed On World Turtle Day

Recognising Eco Barge’s growing needs, GET decided to upgrade the original 5kW system to a new 13kW eco friendly solar system. This larger system would not only slash energy bills but also provide a cleaner, more sustainable energy source to power the organisation’s vital work.

In a fitting tribute to Eco Barge’s incredible efforts, the upgraded system was installed on World Turtle Day, 23rd May, a celebration of the marine animals that Eco Barge works so hard to protect.

The Outcome

Zero Bills, Full Focus On The Reef

The impact of the upgraded system has been immediate and transformative. Since installation, Eco Barge’s energy bills have been reduced to zero, allowing the organisation to redirect funds towards their critical programs. The system comes with the GET360 Guarantee, providing ongoing support for the life of the system, including system servicing and 24/7 monitoring.

With zero energy bills and a reliable eco friendly solar solution powering their operations, Eco Barge can continue focusing on what they do best, protecting the marine environment of the Whitsundays for generations to come.

“Over the 13 years Green Energy Technologies has already looked after us, the team have always been supportive. They’re only a phone call away!”
