Eco Barge Clean Seas Inc is a not-for profit environmental organisation dedicated to preserving and protecting the marine environment and wildlife of the Whitsundays and Great Barrier Reef.
Since its inception in 2009, the organisation has worked tirelessly to combat marine debris, protect marine life, and raise awareness about the importance of environmental stewardship in North Queensland’s iconic waters.
Operating out of their headquarters in the Whitsundays, Eco Barge runs a busy operation. The team organises and undertakes barge trips to remove marine debris from local islands, operates a rescue and rehabilitation centre for sick and injured marine turtles, and processes the debris collected from waterways. The headquarters is the heart of their mission, housing quarantine tanks for turtle care, equipment for debris sorting, and the hardworking staff and volunteers who keep the organisation moving forward.
Back in 2013, Green Energy Technologies partnered with Eco Barge to provide a 5kW solar system for their headquarters. This initial donation helped offset their electricity costs so their funds could be better put to use helping keep the Whitsundays seas and islands clean.

Over the years, Eco Barge’s impact has been extraordinary. The organisation has collected over 263,221 kilograms of marine debris, completed more than 550 barge clean-up trips, and cared for over 272 injured turtles in their dedicated rescue centre. Their work is helping to protect local marine life and preserve the natural beauty of the Whitsundays for future generations.
As Eco Barge’s reach and impact have expanded, so too have their operational demands. Running a facility that processes large amounts of marine debris and houses multiple quarantine tanks for turtles requires significant energy.
For any not-for-profit organisation, keeping operational costs down is critical. Funds saved on running expenses can be redirected toward conservation activities, rescue operations, and community outreach. However, with growing energy needs, Eco Barge found that electricity bills were quickly becoming one of their highest recurring costs.
GET, North Queensland’s leading solar installer, has a long history of supporting local organisations with sustainable energy solutions. Their mission, “Transitioning Australia to a Renewable Future,” aligns perfectly with Eco Barge’s dedication to environmental conservation.
Recognising Eco Barge’s growing needs, GET decided to upgrade the original 5kW system to a new 13kW eco friendly solar system. This larger system would not only slash energy bills but also provide a cleaner, more sustainable energy source to power the organisation’s vital work.
In a fitting tribute to Eco Barge’s incredible efforts, the upgraded system was installed on World Turtle Day, 23rd May — a celebration of the marine animals that Eco Barge works so hard to protect.
“Over the 13 years Green Energy Technologies has already looked after us, the team have always been supportive. They’re only a phone call away!”
— Libby, Founder of Eco Barge
The impact of the upgraded eco friendly solar system has been immediate and transformative. Since installation, Eco Barge’s energy bills have been reduced to zero, allowing the organisation to redirect funds towards their critical programs.
What’s more, the solar system comes with GET360 Guarantee, which provides ongoing support for the life of the system, including system servicing and 24/7 monitoring. This ensures Eco Barge has peace of mind knowing their energy needs are fully covered.
With their eco friendly solar Eco Barge not only reduces its environmental footprint but also sets an example for other not-for-profit organisations looking to embrace sustainable practices.
The collaboration between Eco Barge and Green Energy Technologies demonstrates how local partnerships can deliver real, lasting benefits for the environment and community. With zero energy bills and a reliable eco friendly solar solution powering their operations, Eco Barge can continue focusing on what they do best — protecting the marine environment of the Whitsundays for generations to come.
