Residential Solar Questions Answered

Curious about solar? We’ve got you covered. Here are some common answers to help you understand how solar energy works and why it’s a smart choice for your home.

Can solar power my whole house?

Solar can power the whole house. The key item to understand is that solar works as an assistant with the power grid. Both the gris and solar work harmoniously together. So, the solar would take over the grid power whenever it has enough power to do so. It would also work in harmony with the grid where it only has half or none of the power for example at night. So, at times during the day solar would power the whole house but at night without a battery the grid would take over.

Going solar is basically layering another service of cheaper cleaner energy over the top of your existing energy provider.

It gives you cheaper solar power along with the stability and consistency of the grid.

Do you really save money with home solar panels?

Of course! Using home solar panels helps you save money right away, with your savings increasing as soon as you have recouped the installation cost. You’ll find more money in your pocket as your power bills go down by having reduced your grid-provided energy consumption.

Moreover, having an energy-efficient home or a ready home solar system can increase the value of your property should you decide to sell it someday. It also makes your property more appealing if you are currently renting it.

What is the most efficient solar power system for home use?

When it comes to solar panels for homes, there are three main types, namely thin film, polycrystalline and monocrystalline. Of the three, monocrystalline solar panels have the highest efficiency rating of around 15% to 20% to as high as 24.4%. Compared with other panels, they produce the highest power outputs whilst requiring the least amount of space. Aside from this, monocrystalline solar panels have a long functional lifespan and are moderately priced.

This makes them a very popular choice among homeowners and the reason why we recommend them. Ready to have your very own solar power system for your home? Do you still pay for electricity with solar panels?

Depending on the size of your home solar system and your habits, you may still receive a small electricity bill. Although solar energy is free and available all year long, the capacity of your system to produce the energy you need on a daily basis will determine how much you’ll still owe the power company.

You can also reduce the amount of grid-sourced electricity you require by adjusting your habits and running appliances that consume a lot of electricity when your home solar system is producing the maximum amount of converted electricity.

Moreover, if you produce more electricity than you need, it gets exported onto the energy grid as you are selling the excess back to your energy company. This will be counted in your net meter, and you’ll be paid a feed-in tariff for every kilowatt-hour (kWh) of electricity you export into the grid, further lowering your electricity bill.

Can solar panels be moved to another house?

Yes, solar panels can be moved from one house to the other.

Would you do this? Probably not. Why? The installation process is quite labour intensive and costs a good proportion of the total system cost. Removing a system also costs money.

A solar system can increase the value of a house, so many people will say that it is much more sensible and cost efficient to leave your solar system behind, to increase the value of your house for sale, and purchase a new solar system at your new house.

Will solar panels damage my roof?

In most cases it is necessary to mount solar panels to your roof in order for them to operate properly. There are a few different ways panels can be mounted to roof surfaces, and most ways require small modifications to your roof. However, all solar panel mounting systems must pass stringent engineering standards to be allowed to be installed in systems that will be eligible for the government’s rebate.

However, it is vital to note that these systems must be installed properly to the manufacturer guidelines to be effective and have the least impact on your roof. Green Energy Technologies staff are highly trained in the Radiant roof mounting system and pay a great deal of care and attention to installing the system correctly to ensure your roof is not damaged and your most valuable assets are protected from the elements.
